Six months ago, on Planet Frost:
Tundra was called into the Palace on Planet Frost. At the time, he was wearing his Training Weights, standard issue from Planet Frost. He was going to have to get new ones soon, as he was pretty much used to them. News rang out through their home Planet. Their leader had been killed in battle on one of the many planets they went to take over. Many were confused as to how such a powerful individual managed to get killed by a no name alien species, but rumor had it the leader was caught in an ambush all by his lonesome in a hail mary, last ditch effort to drive the PTO from the planet.
After the siege was over and the race was enslaved and their planet declared as “PTO Territory”, a power vacuum was leftover. Many were talking about who would be next up to take up the mantle. A lot of names were thrown out into the air for potential candidates, but Tundra took initiative and volunteered himself. All he had to do now was prove to the higher ups that he was worthy of leading the Planet Trade Organization towards a better and brighter future.
He entered the throne room, finding himself looking up at an empty seat at the top of a set of stairs where the previous Ruler used to be. Adjacent to the stairs were walls that surrounded him in sort of a semicircle. Chairs were placed along this wall, with approximately six high Generals, all Changelings, sitting in each chair. They all looked down upon him with a look of skepticism. Tundra knew that look, they were already sizing him up and doubting his abilities. It was time to correct that.
One of the Generals spoke up.
“So, you are the “Tundra” we’ve heard about. Tell me, how long have you served under the Planet Trade Organization?”
“My first time in the field was approximately six years ago.”
“And what makes you think you have what it takes to lead? Many of the names I’ve heard were top of their class, sharp minds who have to singlehandedly changed the tide of battle with their ability. What makes you think you’re more qualified than they are?”
Tundra took a moment before answering.
“Have you nothing to say?”
“I would say I think differently than they do.”
He heard snickers all around him.
“Tch, how so?”
“Well, let’s see here. All those people you mentioned, they all think about the fight in front of them. They’re not thinking about the resources we waste tackling head on at every random filler planet that we try to go up against. How we’re just going around without a real plan, scared of the real enemy.”
“You dare accuse us of fearing these insects?”
“Well, let’s see. The last major blow we dealt to the USD was when we took over Namek, and the only real thing we gained there were access to their dragon balls. You know, whenever we figured out how to locate them. Sure, we enslaved a lot of Namekians, but most of them aren’t even fighters. Now, we can hardly do anything without the USD knowing about it. We had one clean opportunity to take to deal a huge blow and allow the USD to crumble, and we wasted it on a bunch of nomads.”
One of the other Generals spoke up this time.
“So, let me ask you, what would you have done?”
“Well, if it were me, I would’ve set our sights on Vegeta. Their race, while strong, seem to be addicted to combat. I doubt it would’ve taken much to get them under our control. With that, our fighting force would’ve increased in power tenfold.”
“Out of all the planets in the USD, you would’ve chosen to go to war with the race that had the strongest warriors in the alliance?”
“Why is everything involving mindless fighting with all of you? I would’ve thought we had a little more grace than that.”
“Excuse me?”
“This is part of the problem, we’re brute forcing our way through everything we come across. Instead wasting our numbers, we could work behind the scenes.”
“Hmmm… Elaborate.”
“We could use our hired guns to take out crucial individuals.”
“We already take out countless world leaders before we start invading.”
“That’s not what I mean. I mean strategically targeting individuals to gain a particular reaction. Sure, we could cause some civil unrest and the loss of a person for the citizens to turn to like we have been doing, but if we say… caused a civil war? Have someone under our payroll to fight for control of the planet politically and then sweep their independence right from under their noses? We could strike deals with the more… nefarious factions on certain planets to help us.”
“You really think you could pull something like that off?”
“I fail to see why not. A little bribe here or there, a little catastrophic incident there, a little nudge in the politics, and on top of all that our operations will be a lot more on the down low. The USD will have a harder time tracking our activities.”
The Generals were discussing amongst themselves. From what he could hear, they seemed pretty divided.
“Listen, our leader’s death was unfortunate. He was a great leader and was the one that got us to where we are now. However, this is also a perfect opportunity for a change in tactics and direction. Under my control, the Planet Trade Organization will have a little more…finesse. We can continue our pillaging of no name worlds, it’ll keep the USD distracted from our real strategy. Right now, we should be focusing on Earth and Vegeta. Those two worlds are the biggest threats to our cause at the moment, but could soon become our greatest assets. All we need is to establish our pieces, plan carefully, move them in precisely the right place, and be very patient. After that, we can strike, and victory will surely be ours.”
The Generals took a moment to discuss. They were still skeptical, as seeing was believing for them. However, they really didn’t have anyone that had pleaded a better case than Tundra right now. Not having much choice, it was decided. The General who spoke up in the very beginning rose out of his seat.
“Very well, Tundra. You have been selected to lead us. However, we are skeptical and reluctant. We need you to prove yourself and show us some results. Preferably soon.”
“Don’t worry, soon you will see.”
All of them bowed to him.
“Hail, Lord Tundra!”
